Kondapalli Seetharamaiah was one of the charismatic leaders of the Naxalite movement in the Telugu states for more than twenty years between 1970 and 1991. Under his leadership, the Peoples’ War captured the imagination of people, boldly challenging authority and taking unusual steps. The state vacillated between repression and conciliation and the PWG used this fully to expand in a vigorous fashion. Peasantry were organised and red flags planted on the lands of landlords who fled to the cities in Telangana.
