About The Author
Ram Manohar Lohia (1910–1967) was born into a Bania family in Akbarpur, now part of Uttar Pradesh. He earned a doctoral degree from Humboldt University in Berlin, where he submitted a Ph.D. thesis on the salt tax in India, inspired by Gandhian values. He actively participated in the Indian independence movement and quickly rose to prominence as a key leader. In 1934, he joined the Congress Socialist Party, a faction within the Congress Party. Due to differences with Nehru, he joined the newly formed Praja Socialist Party in 1952. Throughout his life, Lohia fiercely opposed the Indian caste system and fought against injustices arising from gender and class hierarchies. Renowned as an exceptional orator and political leader, he also gained fame as a distinguished writer. His books, such as The Indian Caste System, Marx, Gandhi, and Socialism, and Who Were Responsible for India’s Partition?, achieved widespread acclaim.
